Shawn Jang, General Manager of RCI, was invited to speak at the 2025 SDGs International Forum hosted by CommonWealth Magazine on March 24–25, 2025. Representing the consulting perspective, he joined global leaders to share insights on advancing the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through standardized and measurable ESG implementation.

During his speech, Shawn emphasized that ESG is not a slogan—it must begin with clarity, structure, and visibility. He explained that sustainability efforts are no longer optional, but are driven by evolving customer expectations, supply chain pressures, and operational challenges that businesses face today.

Shawn opened his talk by reflecting on his background—having moved to the United States in 1980, growing up and working in land development and construction, particularly in Maryland. Returning to Taiwan in 2012, he brought with him a passion for sustainability and a desire to integrate the more rigorous environmental standards he had experienced abroad into Taiwan’s business context.

He shared personal experiences of life in the U.S. that shaped his environmental awareness and called attention to the urgent realities of climate change. With global population growth and increasing consumption, he warned of the growing strain on Earth’s resources in the coming years.

One of the key messages of his presentation was the critical importance of healthy indoor environments. “Sustainability isn’t just about the planet—it’s also about people,” he noted. With most people spending 90% of their time indoors, Shawn argued that buildings must prioritize air quality, comfort, and human well-being as part of responsible design and operation.

Although ESG and sustainability may appear complex, Shawn stressed that their core principles are universal and actionable. He advocated for simplification, data visibility, and consistent management, encouraging companies to leverage frameworks like ISO, GRI, and TCFD to implement change. “The best kind of sustainability,” he stated, “is the kind that people can feel, measure, and manage.”
